Values of the organization

  1. Social responsibility

The Institute of Social Studies and Analysis does not subscribe to the so-called ‘value-free approach’ to social sciences and research. ISSA relies on the values of social solidarity, equality, inclusion and social responsibility. Therefore, the organization pays great attention to the social problems of Georgian society: poverty, social, economic and gender inequality; institutional and systemic problems related to the integration of different social groups. These are the problems which appear daily in social life. First, ISSA recognizes these problems as the most important challenges society is facing; secondly, it aims to contribute to the process of addressing these challenges through its work.

  1. Enhancing the importance of social studies

Social research is a relatively new field in Georgia. It attained significant importance in the post-Soviet period. Therefore, the attitude towards this field in the society has never been stable and it has changed as per the socio-cultural or political contexts. Nowadays, social studies have a big potential in terms of having a positive impact on social processes. The work conducted by ISSA aims at supporting the use of this very potential, which, on the other hand, supports the development of stable positive perception of research in the society.

The following activities need to be enhanced to increase the positive impact of social research:

1. Any policy or strategy which is directly or indirectly linked to the social life should be based on research: the potential of social research is not fully used by those who develop and implement policy in various directions. Social research can play an important role in various fields in the rational planning of policy considering the interests of relevant social groups, as well as in the efficient implementation of this policy in practice.

2. Social issues should be viewed and regarded on the basis of the analysis of the results of social research; there are a lot of topics in the Georgian reality which are not studied in-depth, i.e. from the viewpoint of all stakeholders. Therefore, often a phenomenon is perceived based on the personal experience of the decision-making persons or in general, considering incomplete and subjective picture. Such practice is not uncommon for the public discourse. This is the reason that the public is easily misled and most importantly, inadequate decisions are made in the process of planning and implementing policy. Enhancing the importance of social studies will set a standard according to which the society should be supplied with empirical knowledge and information on various current issues of importance which will leave less space for speculations in the public discourse.

3. Producing knowledge through social research

In accordance with its profile, the Institute of Social Studies and Analysis pays great attention to the dissemination of new, innovative knowledge of social studies. It is strictly recommended for a researcher to integrate theoretical and practical work and to strive to actively move in both directions.

It is important to us to not only enhance awareness of social research, but also provide opportunities to interested persons to gain and enrich relevant knowledge
